Fruits are delicious and contain lots of healthy nutrients. However, we are not aware of what fruits are low in sugar and what fruits to eat less because of sugar content.

If you are already prediabetic or diabetic, most probably you have to cut out processed foods, which are high in sugar content and indulge with fruits in the belief that all fruits are safe to eat. But still, moderation is the key as with most things in life.

You have to learn which fruits are low in sugar content and which one is not in order to lower blood sugar levels and satisfy your sweet tooth.

1. Watermelon

Watermelons are summer fruit and mostly made up of water. The same is a great source of iron and lycopene.

Iron is a mineral that our bodies need for many functions. It helps our muscles store and use oxygen. It is part of the hemoglobin, a protein that carries oxygen from our lungs throughout our bodies.

Lycopene is a phytonutrient, which is a naturally-occurring compound in fruits and vegetables that reacts with the human body to trigger healthy reactions. It is very effective at protecting cells from damage and may help lower the risk of heart disease, which may be the cause of Diabetes Mellitus.

2. Avocado

I underwent a Fasting Blood Sugar test last April 7, 2018, and the result was 113 mg/dl, which is an above-normal blood-sugar level.

This product is so delicious and tasty. Even children can drink this one. However, if you are already pre-diabetic or diabetic, you have to shake the powder on a glass of water instead of stirring it so that not all the sugar will dissolve. Ampalaya (Momordica Charantia)

It is also known as bitter gourd or bitter melon in English; widely grown in the Philippines for its fruit with many uses. Its many varieties differ substantially in the shape and bitterness of the fruit. It is a unique vegetable-fruit that can be used as food or medicine.

The fruit is most often eaten green. At this stage, the skin is tender and edible. The flesh of the fruit is crunchy and watery in texture. Pith and seeds pith appear white in unripe fruits. They are not that bitter and can be removed before cooking. The young shoots and leaves of the bitter melon may also be eaten as greens.

Philippine Law on Traditional and Alternative Medicine

Republic Act No. 8423 known as the Traditional and Alternative Medicine Act (TAMA) of 1997, was approved on December 9, 1997. One of its objectives is to encourage scientific research on and develop traditional and alternative health care systems that have a direct impact on public health care.

Relative to this, one of the identified herbal medicines is the Ampalaya (Momordica Charantia) common name includes “bitter melon” or “bitter gourd”. Bitter gourd on diabetes

The fruit contains at least three active substances with anti-diabetic properties, including charantin, vicine and polypeptide-p, which have been confirmed to have a blood glucose-lowering effect. These substances either work individually or together to help reduce blood sugar levels.

It is also known to contain lectin that reduces blood glucose concentrations and suppressing appetite — similar to the effects of insulin in peripheral tissues and in the brain.

Consumption tips – bitter gourd

  1. Choose unripe bitter melons that are firm.
  2. Avoid those that have turned orange or have soft spots.
  3. Store bitter melons in the vegetable bin in the refrigerator to prolong shelf-life.
  4. Clean your bitter melon under cold running water and brush with a soft  vegetable brush.
  5. To prepare, slice the melon length-wise and scoop out the seeds. To lessen the bitter flavor, soak it in salt water for about half an hour before juicing or cooking.
  6. Get the larger variety because it is less in bitterness.
  7. To make a bitter gourd juice more palatable, add a teaspoon of honey, or add another fresh juice such as apple juice, carrot juice, tomatoes juice or grape juice.

Availability of bitter melon

Bitter melon can be taken in several forms: it can be eaten as a vegetable; made into juice; the seeds can be added to food in a powdered form; it can be used in the form of a decoction by boiling pieces of the bitter melon in water; bitter melon extract can be bought as a herbal supplement.

There are plenty of ways to cook it:

  1. Ampalaya Salad. Wash the cut Ampalaya with salt and then rinse to lessen bitterness. Mix it with tomatoes (no seeds), cucumber (no seeds), onion, water, and a little vinegar with salt.
  2. Ampalaya with egg. After cooking the fried garlic and onion, mix it with ampalaya, egg and a little salt.
  3. Ampalaya with meat. After cooking the fried garlic, onion & meat, mix it with ampalaya, egg and a little salt.
  4. Ampalaya mixed with other vegetables. Sautes garlic and onion. Then, mix it with squash, eggplant and lady’s finger (Okra). Put a little water, soy sauce, salt or seasoning.

1. Hypoglycemic- an extract has been shown to be effective in lowering blood sugar levels. It is believed to have a stabilizing effect on blood pressure and is used  to treat anxiety.

High blood sugar can be a serious health problem. In fact, it is the main  characteristic of diabetes. Over time, high blood sugar raises the risk of many serious health problems, including heart disease. For this reason, it is important to keep blood sugar within healthy limits. Interestingly, several studies have shown that Moringa Oleifera may help lower blood sugar levels. These effects are caused by plant compounds found in Moringa leaves, such as isothiocyanates.

Chili (Capsicum Frutescens)

It is an excellent source of Calcium, Iron, Phosphorous, Vitamin A and B. It is used as a food spice and an aid to digestion, and was once thought to aggravate stomach ulcers. Researchers indicated that Capsicum could help prevent the formation of dangerous blood clots. Scientists have concluded that Capsicum does possess fibrinolytic activity, meaning that it can break down blood clots. The active ingredient in Capsicum is a compound called “Capsaicin” which is a cardiovascular stimulant. Capsaicin acts as a dramatic and long lasting anesthetic.

The genus Ipomoea, with over 500 species, is the largest genus in the family convolvulaceae. The genus includes important food crops (sweet potato and water spinach. Ipomoea batatas (also known as Caiapo) is the only plant with iodine. It is high in calories and Vitamin A.

I have interviewed some respondents in order to determine their activities on how their lifestyles affect their blood sugar levels.

Diabetic People

Ian (no family name to protect privacy) is 42 years old. His Diabetes Mellitus was confirmed in 2009. The highest Fasting Blood Sugar result he got was 434 mg/dl.

He got into the routine of taking insulin shots every time his blood sugar levels escalated because he soon became insulin-dependent. His blood sugar levels do not lower down to normal levels even after injecting insulin.

His lifestyle involves him eating white cooked rice three times a day and in-between snacks and exercising by playing basketball two times a week for one hour. He does not administer herbal medicine, and does not like to eat vegetables or bitter gourd because of its bitterness.

The following are his signs and symptoms: frequent urination, body
itchiness, dizziness, excessive thirst, hunger and blurred vision.

On the other hand, Rheza (no family name to protect privacy) is 45 years old. Her diabetes mellitus started in December 2016. The highest Fasting Blood Sugar result she got was 167 mg/dl.

She administers a tablet every time her blood sugar levels shoot up. Her blood sugar levels lower down to normal levels but would just get back to high blood sugar levels after a few weeks.

She eats white cooked rice a lot for three (3) times a day and in between  snacks. Her form of exercise is brisk walking and doing household chores. She does not administer herbal medicine, but she likes to eat vegetables like a bitter gourd.

The following are her signs and symptoms: increased urine output, hunger, fatigue and blurred vision.

We need to try by all means to minimize eating sugar-rich or carbohydrates-rich foods as much as possible in order to prevent its after effect like blurred vision, numbness, itchiness, slow-healing wound, gangrene feet/fingers and all other signs and symptoms.

People with Normal Blood Sugar Levels

Nestor Hupida is already 54 years old. During his Medical check-up last December 2017, his FBS result is only 95 mg/dL. According to him, he hasn’t yet experienced high blood sugar levels.

He eats a lot during breakfast and lunch but light only during dinner. His routine is to jog for 45 minutes from Mondays-Fridays and to drive bicycle for four (4) Hours on Saturdays and holidays.

While Dr. Jacobo Maria DV. Mendoza, is 40 years old. During his Medical check-up last December 2017, his FBS result is only 96 mg/dL. According to him, he never experiences yet to have high blood sugar levels.

He eats a lot of protein-rich foods but low in carbohydrates. His routine exercise is to go to gym for one (1) hour almost every day except Sunday and swimming during vacation and when time permits.


After the interviews, we could observe of what is common with people with high blood sugar levels: lack of exercise or eat much of carbohydrate-rich foods like bread and white rice.

The foods they eat do not compensate the release of energy-using glucose. Most of the reasons that they gave were that they do not have time, or they were so tired from work.

However, we have to change this mindset in order to have normal blood sugar levels, to live longer, avoid or minimize the use of synthetic medicines and not be burdensome to our families.

The following tips would help to minimize the high blood sugar levels:

1. Convert sedentary lifestyle or passive activities to active activities.

2. Buy only enough food a few meals at a time.

3. Don’t keep the large amount of food on hand since there is always a possibility of eating it all at once.

4. Learn what triggers your craving for foods like very hungry, no self-control on eating, always thinking about foods.

5. If you are used to eating when you are very hungry already, the tendency is you will eat too much. Foods must be eaten slowly and masticated well to avoid swallowing large amounts of foods. Learn to control them and you must know the cue on this.

6. Prepare your fresh meal. Do not rely on fastfoods since these foods are  likely to be high in calories because of the methods used in preparation. And you might order for much and thereby overeat.

Diabetic disease can be controlled if we only practice a healthy eating habit and frequent exercises that will help control our blood sugar levels.

Will power and correct mindset are the rule on lowering blood sugar levels as failure is just in a corner to happen.

We do really love to eat and much more on foods rich in Carbohydrates — burgers, pizza pies, French fries, pastas and even those mouthwatering desserts of all sorts together with sweetened beverages and the like.

Not as much as I would have liked to eat these foods, but almost everyone. Don’t you? High blood sugar levels or blood glucose may actually cause diabetes. Glucose comes from the food we eat and insulin is a hormone that helps the glucose gets into our cells to give them energy. Normally, blood glucose levels are tightly controlled by insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas that lowers blood glucose levels.

When the blood glucose elevates, insulin is released from the pancreas to normalize the glucose levels by promoting the uptake of glucose into body cells. In patients with diabetes, the insufficient production of or lack of response to insulin causes hyperglycemia.

With prediabetes, this means that our blood sugar is higher than normal but not high enough to be called diabetes. Having prediabetes puts us at a higher risk of getting diabetes.

If with diabetes already, our body does not make insulin or does not use insulin well. Without enough insulin, the glucose stays in our blood.

Over time, having too much glucose in your blood may cause serious problems. It can damage our kidneys, nerves and eyes. Heart disease, stroke and even the need to remove a limb may also be possible.

According to the latest data of the Department of Health – Philippines in 2013, Diabetes Mellitus deaths reached 33,656 or 6.46% of total deaths. The same is number 6 cause death in the Philippines and number 20 in the world. The department predicts that from 2.7 million in 2000, the number of diabetics in the country will reach 7.7 million by the year 2030.

With regard to the data of World Health Organization, diabetes prevalence increased fourfold, from 108 million in 1980 to 422 million in 2014. In the Philippines, the situation is no better where it is estimated that 1 in 5 Filipinos is a diabetic.

Diabetes now affects even young people but it is a trend not only in the Philippines, but elsewhere. The rate of diabetes affecting those aged 18 and above has risen to 8.5 in 2014 from 4.7 in 1980 per World Health Organization’s data.

  2. Eat Magnesium rich foods (Spinach, Chard, Pumpkin Seeds, Yogurt, Almonds, Black Beans, avocado, figs, banana, dark chocolate) or green leafy vegetables
  3. Increase Fiber Intake (Artichokes, Avocados, Black Beans, Bran Flakes, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Lentils, Lima Beans, Pears, Pearled Barley, Oatmeal, Raspberries, Split Peas, Whole-Wheat Pasta )
  4. Eat Low Glycemic Index foods (whole grains, nuts, legumes, fruits, vegetables without starch)
  5. Control Stress Levels
  6. Control Carbohydrate Intake
  7. Drink Water and Stay Hydrated
  8. Exercise Regularly
  9. Gets Enough Quality Sleep
  10. Implement Small Frequent Meals

How to Determine Blood Sugar Levels

To determine blood sugar level, we have to do any of the following simple tests:

  1. Fasting Blood Sugar Test means refraining from eating or drinking any liquids other than water for eight hours.
  2. A 2-Hour Postprandial Glucose Test is a blood glucose test that determines the amount of a type of sugar, called glucose, in the blood after a meal.
  3. While Capillary Blood Glucose Monitoring is most frequently recommended for people with diabetes. They require just a simple stick to the fingertip and a small drop of blood. This is usually recommended for patients with unstable blood sugar levels or during episodes of infection or other illness.

To follow the to-do-list would be burdensome but somehow by doing it little by little, we could adapt to it and would enjoy its best result.

I will give you a little background of myself. I am a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Bachelor of Laws, Master in Public Administration and module of Computer Programming.

During my grade school years, my father established an electronic shop. That was the time my interest on electronics came in.

In my high school years, I attended in a trade school where technical skills of students were developed like electronics, electrical, automotive, machine shop, drafting and carpentry. I took up electronics as my elective subject since it was my passion. I really dreamed of becoming an Electronic Engineer.

When we transferred residence to pursue my college studies, my father asked me about the tuition fee of a private school for Bachelor of Science in Electronics and Communication Engineering, and I said it was 8,500 Philippine Pesos or $216 per semester. Then, he asked again: how much is the tuition fee of a public school for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing? I answered: it is 516 Philippine Pesos or $13. Then, he said: here are 600 Philippine Pesos or $15 and keep the change. Lol . . . . . . . .  I was not able to pursue my dream course because of poverty. However, it did not hinder my dream to finish school and pursue my passion on electronics, specifically on computer and internet.

In May 2014, my mother died of complications of Diabetes Mellitus, and I also have distant relatives died of the same case. Mine and of my wife’s blood sugar is also above normal already. In the Philippines alone, it has about 6 million or 5.8% cases of Diabetes Mellitus in 2016. This is quite alarming.

I came to know that there are drugs and medicines for Diabetes Mellitus but compromise other organs of the human body. That is why I got interested on natural/herbal medicines considering that these have less adverse effect to our organs considering as if we are just eating fruits and vegetables in the powdered form.
